The origins of this highly popular game can be traced back to 1530 Italy, where a game called “Lo Giuoco Code Loto” was born and, rumor has it, is still played every Saturday in different parts of the country.

The game spread beyond Italian borders and took prominence in France during the 1700’s where playing cards and tokens were implemented along with the first instances of number calling.

In the 1800’s it became an educational tool in Germany, where it was used as an aide for the teaching of multiplication and spelling.

In Atlanta circa 1929, at a carnival, the game was introduced using beans as tokens for marking the numbers on the playing cards which were made out of cardboard sheets, hence the name “Beano” as it was then know. Edwin Lowe, a casual observer, noticed how engrossed the people playing this game were. It is said that the carnival worker had to remove the players from the premises in the small hours of the night.

Lowe introduced the game to his friends in New York, running games on a weekly basis. Popular legend has it that one of his friends, overcome with excitement at winning a game, yelled “Bingo” instead of “Beano”, effectively changing the name of the game.
